Overview
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Apolitical Academy and the Forum of Young Global Leaders launched a partnership we hope will hasten innovation in political and government leadership, to unlock the Fourth Industrial Revolution’s promise to build a more sustainable future.
Apolitical Academy supports the development of a diverse and dynamic network of aspiring public servants and elected representatives to contribute to the revitalization of democracy.
By engaging and training young leaders we provide the personal and professional tools necessary to prepare our participants for a future in the public life of their countries.
Our YGL Public Leadership Programme enables participants to participate in group plenaries, small group discussions and receive inputs from guest speakers. Participants will explore the internal and external drivers of their decision to transition to public life. What does it take to drive systemic and organisational change in the public sector? What is the difference between formal authority and political authority? What skills and networks should public leaders be nurturing in order to become not only effective campaigners but also powerful change-makers.
Through this programme, participants will explore the connection between personal history and public purpose, while further interrogating the challenges and complexities of driving change for the better in public sector institutions.
They will connect with their inner motivations and personal leadership purpose; to work through the personal challenges which may have previously hindered their ability to tap into their leadership genius; and which equips them with a language in which to articulate and better understand their emotional responses to adversity or resistance in their efforts to drive change in their organisations, countries and regions.
Participants will be introduced to government and political leaders who have faced an ethical crossroads in their efforts to be responsible and accountable public leaders. They will dive deep into the practicalities of running a political campaign for election to public office. Fellows will be required to deploy what they have learned about defining a vision, identifying constituencies, making a case for change and leading ethically and transparently to the challenge of seeking election to public office.
Lastly, participants will be challenged to reflect on who will form part of their inner circle of mentors, advisors and supporters. How will they ensure that self-care is built into every stage of their leadership journey? In times of stress and pressure, upon whom are fellows confident they can rely on for advice and quandary? How will they ensure their ability to “survive” the many stresses of a complex system of competing interests?
